Lot 109

Carte Geographique, Statistique et Historique du Territoire d'Arkansas" Jean Alexandre Buchon. Reflecting H.S. Long's exploratory expeditions, this is an important map of the early western territories, focusing on the large Arkansas Territory, and depicting an early western border in Missouri. The map extends to the Rocky Mountains, and the plains are labeled Grand Desert. Numerous Indian villages are shown based on information gained from the Lewis and Clark expedition, and other important exploration routes are shown. The map shows Arkansas Territory extending to include present-day Oklahoma. The western portions of the map are identical to Long's map of 1823, also published by Carey & Lea. French text surrounds the map on three sides of the large folio sheet (20 x 24.75"). The map was originally engraved by Young & Delleker in 1822, and published by Carey and Lea. This is the French version by J. Carez 1825.

R. Lizars, 1831 Map of The United States, 18" X 22", Published by D. Lizar Edinburgh, Scotland. Arkansas Territory still encompass most of the state of Oklahoma on this map. Texas is referred as a "Great Desert." Wisconsin and Minnesota referred as Northwest Territory. Map is hand tinted in red, yellow, and green.

Hand tinted in greens, yellow, blue, and red.

Cook Past Commander Trans-Mississippi Department U.C.V. on the cover; June 1898 letter from the Governor of Arkansas Daniel W. Jones to William McKinley requesting V.Y. Cook`s appointment to Brigadier General of The Arkansas Volunteer Guard and a letter to U.S. Senator James K. Jones urging the senator to go at once and see the President on Cook`s behalf. Several type written pages by a Cook family member telling of Cook`s Civil War days fighting with Nathan Bedford Forrest, farming, postmaster, railroad and other ventures. Type written copy of a surrender agreement signed R. Todhunter A.A. Gen. May 9th, 1865. A letter to V.Y. Cook mentioning K.K.K. activity dated 1918, and much more
V. Y. Cook was born in in Boydsville, Ky. November 14, 1848 and was a Soldier, Merchant and a planter. Cook was the son of William D. and Pernicia Dodds Cook. Early in the Civil War at age 15 V. Y. joined the Confederate Army Company H. 7 Kentucky Calvary under General Nathan Bedford Forrest and served until its surrender May 10th 1865. On August 17, 1897 he was appointed a Major General in the Arkansas National Guard.

According to the index, there are 382 biographies for Texas, about 150 for Arkansas, about 60 for Colorado, nearly 20 for New Mexico and 7 for the Indian Territory. There are full page steel plate engravings (portraits) with facsimile autographs for many hundreds of the people, each with a tissue paper guard. Book measures 9 x 12 inches. Oversized and heavy.
