Barbara of Portugal (Maria Madalena Bárbara Xavier Leonor Teresa Antónia Josefa; 4 December 1711 -- 27 August 1758) was an Infanta of Portugal and later Queen of Spain as wife of Ferdinand VI of Spain. Oil on canvas painting of the Regal Queen dressed in a diamond and jewel encrusted dress with diamond earrings and hair comb, holding a geranium Circa 1735. Provenance, the Charles Abels estate Jackson, Tennessee. Painting measures 39.5" X 29.5". Condition: Portrait has been cleaned, had minor touchup and relined.

Lot 591 Item: M. Landucci "The Gladiator" Oil on Canvas C. 1850 Signed Description: M. Landucci "The Gladiator" Oil on Canvas Painting Circa Mid 19th Century. This painting depicts a gladiators entrance into the Coliseum in ancient Rome to the cheers and jeers of the crowd while his opponent awaits him with trident and iaculum. Jean-Léon Gérôme`s (11 May 1824 – 10 January 1904) masterpiece "Pollice verso" exhibits striking similarities to "The Gladiator". Jean-Léon Gérôme studied under Paul Delaroche, whom he accompanied to Italy in (1843–44). Delaroche`s father-in-law, Horace Vernet, was director of the French Academy in Rome in the 1840s. Our research thus far has not yielded any connection between M. Landucci and the French Academy in Rome or any listings for M. Landucci. The painting measures 40" in. X 63.5"in. The mid 19th century Important and large Italian carved and gold gilded baroque style frame measures 58" in. X 81.5" in. Condition: Painting has been professionally cleaned and restored (see photos). Frame has been cleaned and is in good condition with minor gilt losses.
