END OF AN ERA – January 19, 2012 – AB Hamm and Company/Holly’s Grocery/Action Apparel, Inc. will be auctioned off in Ramer. Established in 1906 by A.B. Hamm to be a General Mercantile store from food and groceries to clothing, thread and even coffins, they also sold and bartered for eggs, chickens, pigs and whatever. This store became a fixture in the Ramer area. One time the store had a full meat counter and made loaf bread sandwiches to order by Mr. Gene Hamm and later Joe and Nelson. It sold in 1976 to Charles and Frances Holly who owned a smaller grocery on Highway 57 in Ramer. Eight years later it was sold to Jim and Linda Gray, who bought the store from the Holly’s and moved Action Apparel, Inc. across the tracks to the current building.

Since then, with the addition of a new rubber roof and 60 tons of air conditioning and a 12,000 square foot addition, bringing it to 22,500 square feet, Action Apparel flourished for over 27 years. At one time Action Apparel employed over 200 people, 100 being in Ramer, 60 in Eastview and 40 in Michie, sewing for contractors like Kellwood, Nike, Garan, Snake Creek, Macy’s, Calvin Klein, Reebok and finally for themselves producing their own cloth for the military and 55 Collegic schools. Today the building stands solid and secure and ready to move into the next era. Today it houses the Southern Pro Wrestling Association on Saturday night downstairs and upstairs it is a practice facility for Darwin Coleson’s 12 year old baseball team who recently went to the World Series after winning the Tennessee State Championship. Like all things, as one era ends so the next begins and so it is with AB Hamm & Company building, and a piece of Ramer history. Who knows what is in God’s plan for this building in the future. Maybe, January 19th will reveal some insight into this.

Jim Gray
President of Action Apparel
